S. Navy. Kane was a member of artic explorations searching for the lost John Franklin expedition. This circa 1857, cased, 1 6 tintype is an engraved portrait, probably from his book, Arctic Explorations. The original portrait, a daguerreotype, was taken by Mathew Brady in about 1852. I suspect that this tintype was probably made upon the news of Kane's
